"The Best Jewish Magazine in America"

Endowment Goal: $1,300,000
The very first Pakn Treger appeared in 1981: a homemade, twelve-page newsletter called “The Book Peddler” that featured bold headlines and first-person reports of midnight book rescues. Like the Center, the magazine has grown dramatically over the years while remaining true to the essential spirit of Yiddish. Today’s Pakn Treger, acclaimed by a national columnist as “arguably the best Jewish magazine in America,” offers members and the general public a lively, in-depth look at contemporary Jewish culture and its roots in Yiddish language and literature.

Writers such as Allegra Goodman, Ilan Stavans, Howard Markel, Aryeh Lev Stollman, Jonathan Rosen, and Kenneth Turan grace the magazine’s pages with insightful essays, memoirs, reviews, and fiction. From a report on the only Jewish bookstore in Poland to reviews of Jewish films, Pakn Treger covers the latest currents in an ever-changing Jewish world. Three times each year, thousands of households receive the magazine as a benefit of membership. Their responses to each issue are evidence of an abiding interest in news and ideas from the frontiers of Jewish culture.

As one of the Book Center’s most popular offerings, Pakn Treger must continue to change and grow. It must continue to attract the best and most sought-after writers, illustrators, photographers, and scholars. It must be able to respond quickly to events on the Jewish cultural scene while taking the long view of Jewish history. It must offer an interactive presence on the World Wide Web.

Debate and detail, color and clarity, analysis and argument – these are the attributes that keep Pakn Treger vital and fresh. A dedicated fund will ensure the permanent excellence of the Book Center’s signature publication and provide it with a strong financial base on which to grow.
