Saving a LiteratureEndowment Goal: $5,250,000 First and foremost, our mission is to save Yiddish books. Even with 1.5 million volumes safe on our shelves, the job is far from over. Every morning, trucks from UPS, FedEx, and the post office back up to our loading dock. Our zamlers continue to respond to urgent calls, and our staff members travel thousands of miles to save priceless volumes before it’s too late. How many imperiled Yiddish books remain? No one knows for sure. What we do know is that immigrant Jews were more avid readers than anyone imagined. Even now the deluge shows no sign of abating. The Yiddish Book Rescue Fund will generate the dollars we need to organize zamlers and keep our truck on the road, so we can respond whenever and wherever Yiddish books are threatened. We’re also determined to expand our collection efforts overseas. In recent years we’ve been active in Argentina, Cuba, Russia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. We’ve found titles we’ve never seen before. Some are the last known copies on earth, and all would have been lost had we not arrived in time. From the pampas of Argentina to the most remote corners of Eastern Europe, untold treasures await. We need your help to track them down, bring them home and make them available to everyone. The Herzog Family Fund for Conservation and Preservation, established with a $1 million lead gift, will help ensure the physical security of the books we recover by underwriting the lease on our 36,000-square-foot warehouse, paying for climate control and alarm systems, and supporting a permanent program of preservation and conservation. Make a gift to Saving a Literature. |
