The Fund For YiddishEndowment Goal: $5,000,000 “Im eyn kemekh, eyn toyre,” says the Talmud, “Where there is no bread, there is no learning.” So too with the National Yiddish Book Center. In order to safeguard a great civilization, we must secure our day-to-day operations. We can’t outwit history without first tending to more tog-teglekh, down-to-earth concerns such as heat, light, travel, computers, salaries and health care. Over the past 25 years, the Center has gained an enviable reputation for sound fiscal management. Under our board’s leadership, we are entering our next quarter century with a balanced budget and zero debt. But we still remain what Esquire magazine called “the most completely grassroots Jewish organization in America.” Annual membership accounts for 50% of our yearly income. To help with the rest, we are asking our members to contribute to the Fund for Yiddish – an unrestricted endowment that will support the Yiddish Book Center in perpetuity. A portion of the Fund will be allocated to the care and upkeep of our 37,000-square-foot headquarters, constructed in 1997 on ten acres of rolling apple orchards on the edge of the Hampshire College campus in Amherst, Massachusetts. Open to the public six days a week, the building is truly a lebedike velt – a lively world – bustling with activity. Having succeeded, through the generosity of our members, in giving Yiddish an adres, we now need to maintain our home and keep it secure. As new programs and exhibitions and a growing awareness of Yiddish culture bring ever more visitors through our doors, the Fund for Yiddish will ensure that those who come here in search of Yiddish and Yiddishkeit will always feel at home. Make a gift to the Fund for Yiddish. |
