The President's Fund for Innovation

Endowment Goal: $1,000,000
The National Yiddish Book Center began with a great idea and has been fueled by great ideas ever since. Every day brings new opportunities. And while we have no shortage of imagination, we often find ourselves without the funds to act. That’s why we want to establish a special endowment fund, its income allocated at the discretion of the president, to enable the Center to address the unexpected, to seize new opportunities, and to act quickly to protect Jewish culture and foster new creativity. For example:

  • Why not use the technology of our Steven Spielberg Digital Yiddish Library to digitize Yiddish and other Jewish books in English? We could bring hundreds, if not thousands, of fascinating books back into print – and keep them in print forever.

  • Our current digital files are images – electronic pictures. If we could convert them into text files, every word would become searchable – an innovation that would revolutionize Jewish scholarship! Several brilliant young people are ready to help; can we find the resources they need?

  • One of the country’s most innovative Jewish day schools has asked us to help develop a new curriculum – including an annual program where students would spend several days at the Center, learning about Yiddish culture. This pilot program could eventually take Yiddish to Jewish schools across the country; all we need are the start-up funds.

  • A local theater company has offered to develop an original play about Yiddish culture that would be a great hit with the Center’s younger visitors. The actors are eager, the cost is small, and the potential is enormous. Can we find the funding to begin?

The endowed Fund for Innovation will help the Center’s president act on exciting ideas like these to energize young people and enliven Jewish culture for all.
