Professor Ruth Wisse, Martin Peretz Professor of Yiddish Literature and Professor of Comparative Literature at Harvard University, will discuss Yiddish and her recent book “No Joke, Making Jewish Humor.” That Yiddish developed a tradition of humor is somewhat at odds with its near-annihilation during the Second World War. How did the part of Jewishness that suffered the most extreme damage become the part that is often played for comedy?
