Flow of the exhibit

From the motion picture WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE

The exhibit flows chronologically from the earliest cultural roots, with works featured at The Eric Carle Museum, to the more contemporary artwork on display at the Yiddish Book Center, which includes images from the cinematic portrayal of Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are, cutting-edge graphic novels, original art from Daniel and Jill Pinkwater’s new book, Beautiful Yetta: the Yiddish Chicken, and more.

Separated into six sections, Monsters and Miracles addresses several storytelling motifs:
1.    Lavishly illuminated Haggadot dating back to the eighteenth century.
2.    Biblical stories as reconsidered by modern-day authors.
3.    Illustrations of monsters, giants, goblins and other mythical beings.
4.    Traditional Jewish village life in shtetls, which remain central to the cultural foundation of Ashkenazi Jewish traditions.
5.    Transitions from the Old World to the New.
6.    New trends in Jewish picture books.
