A Living Connection: Photographs from the An-sky Expeditions, 1912-1914

At the turn of the twentieth century, groundbreaking ethnographer S. An-sky traveled with a team through what is now Ukraine, collecting artifacts and documenting Jewish cultural life.

Their goal was to salvage the Jewish culture that An-sky believed was being lost to modernity, through urbanization and the decline of "authentic" Jewish life in the shtetl.

The photographs in the exhibit are from the Museum of the History of Religion in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

A Living Connection: Photographs from the An-sky Expeditions, 1912-1914 is in memory of Melinda Lande Rosenblatt, made possible with the support of Lief D. and André C. Rosenblatt.
