TALK | Inside the Peretz Salon: The Engine Room of Modern Yiddish Culture, with David Mazower
Featuring: David Mazower
How did a small apartment in turn-of-the-century Warsaw—the home of writer Y. L. Peretz—come to be the most formative space in modern Yiddish cultural history? That question was the starting point for our re-creation of Peretz’s Salon—one of the most popular displays in our new core exhibition, Yiddish: A Global Culture.
Chief curator and writer David Mazower will give a virtual tour that explores the unique alchemy that occurred in this domestic space and discusses the challenge of reconstructing it. What was it about Peretz’s personality, ideas, and influence that drew hundreds of young women and men to him at the start of their careers—and how did they go on to transform modern Jewish culture?
